Before we post a full review of Liberal Fascism, by Jonah Goldberg, we want to pose a question to our audience: what is Fascism? How does Fascism differ from Nazism or Communism? Please feel free to speak your mind. If you believe that George Bush was a Nazi, like many progressives have accused him of being while he was in office, then that’s your opinion. Choose your words carefully, because the definition of Fascism has been distorted over a century of progressive revisionism.

According to dictionaries, there are numerous definitions of fascism. Many put Nazism in the same vein as fascism. Going back to it's original uses in Spain and Italy, I think it refers to dictatorships such as those run by Mussolini and Franco. Hitler was, to a degree, a fascist in the fact that he wanted race purity, regimented industry, and an emphasis of aggressive nationalism. Hitler, however, allowed democracy to a degree by getting elected into power. However, he quickly ended that democratic process. Many would say that many conservatives today are fascists because the definition also leads to the idea that fascism is right-wing ideology. I would disagree with that idea. Both sides of the political spectrum can swing so far out of whack with their followers that they can both end up saying the same things. Communism, in effect, could possibly work, if it is agreed upon by all members. The Early Church practiced a form of communism where all members shared equally. However, members were expected to contribute and not just take. Everyone shared but also worked together to make it work. In a capitalistic society, such as ours, it would not work as well. Perhaps because we are too self-centered to actually help each other. It also needs to be agreed upon by all contributors, not dictated by the government. Eventually, it all comes down to what we will accept and allow our leaders to do.
ReplyDeleteWell under Mussolini racial purity was ridiculed as a faulty idea. He let the Jews live pretty much undisturbed(at least as far as their religion goes) until Hitler started leaning on him to "take care" of the Jews. The fascism of Italy was the absolute merger of corporation and government. The Bush admin. Certainly had some very relaxed
ReplyDeleteexamples of this. Obama has taken this ideology much further than Bush ever dreamed. AIG, GM? Fascism is on the right only in the European model of right/left. Its still all govt control, just a matter of how much strongarming and brutality they have to use to implement it. The founders envisioned a new scale with absolute tyranny at one end
and total anarchy at the other. What the European model does is chop off 60% of the founders line and turn it up on its end. Now it's up or down. Still massive government! Communism on top and fascism on the bottom. It completely disregards any limited government! Communism will never work (it has never worked in the history of the world)
because of Human Nature! Someone will always want to control power. Those who do, take advantage of it. Sure they agree with the idea of everyone is equal at first but entually "some are more equal than others". Freedom to choose how to give your money, time, charity is
the only true way to allow a society to function. And Americans are not too self centered. We give charity till it hurts. Look at Haiti and the tsunami relief efforts. Look at Katrina. We give the most of
any country! Finally with regards to democracy...this is why we are a republic. Budding dictators love democracy. It's the easiest system to manipulate. Hitler Chavez Mugabe Mussolini etc were all democratically elected. Then they took the reins away from the people and shut them down. They are trying to make it more "democratic" by eliminating the electoral college in america. It's the check and balance against corruption and the way the little states have a fighting chance against the population centers like California and new York. We are closer to Tyranny side of the scale than we have been since the Wilson era. Read Liberal Fascism and it will open your eyes to an American history you never thought possible, let alone a history that has already happened.
